chess is the definitive game because it incorporates all of the elements that make other games great. For example, monopoly is a big winner because it is highly competitive, chess is the same. The abstract thought and the long range planning as well as the brilliant tactics put chess head and shoulders above other games. However, chess isn't for everyone, for those who think chess is not that great I recommend . . . battleship! I've always had a place in my heart for battleship, I'm not sure why.

Settlers of Catan
There is still some random elements to the game (board set up, and dice rolling) so even novices have a chance. The game is always different so experienced players always have something new to chew on (board set up). The game is decided by reaching ten points, not player elimination (so no one loses, and has to sit while the rest of the group finishes the game)
And best of all the game offers deep strategy, while still being relatively easy to teach.
I very much recommed this game.

Picture. Picture
A great game that came out in the early 1990s (you can find it on ebay)
Super detailed picures that you have to closely study. Then you get to try and remember the picture you just looked closely at and try to write down as many things that begin with each letter in the alphabet. You can get pretty creative!
Some of the other games our famly is into these days are:
Apples to Apples
Would You Rather?
Scrabble
Trivia Pursuit Pop Culture
Scattergories
My kids love:
Apples to Apples Jr
Slamwich
Guess Who
Pictionary Jr
Yahtzee
We love it!

Every time this question is asked I have to put in an answer so that Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride get some lovin'. I am glad to see, however, that Monopoly is not listed as often as it used to be.
