Not understanding someone because of his accent doesn't make you racist or stupid! I'm French and sometimes I have a hard time understanding French speakers from Canada or Africa, and the same happens in Spanish: I live in Spain and I'm fluent in Spanish, but I have a hard time understanding people from Argentina or Cuba... when you don't understand someone just ask them so speak more slowly, I don't think anybody should feel offended!

I don't understand why you felt the need to get defensive about possibly being accused of being racist. Not being able to understand someone isn't racist. Hell, I speak spanish and I have a hard time understanding Spaniards.

If you don't know what they're saying, ask. It's better to ask and feel like a fool for a minute, than to not ask and to be a fool indefinitely.

As long as you ask nicely, and don't have a snobbish attitude about it, it won't be a big deal at all.

There are a number of approaches of expressing this. No hablo español bien. Mi español es mal. Hablo español mal. Normally, any Spanish-talking man or woman with whom you're talking will mechanically deny what you have got simply stated. I doubt that their praises will pass on your head, however do not give up looking to upgrade your talking skills, some thing the case. It will open up such a lot of home windows of possibility to you for interacting with different humans. Native Spanish-audio system, mainly folks that have now not but been in a position to be trained English, will even have the entire extra appreciate for you.
