Moomba means : Get together and Have Fun (aboriginal word)

It is an annual carnaval that runs for 4 days and has water skiing, side shows, free entertainment and events.

It is very poular and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.

It peaked about twenty years ago when the Moomba Parade through Melbourne was telecast live on TV and the Moomba water skiing was broadcast over several days. Today it doesn't get the same media coverage but it arguably offers a better range of entertainment events over a three day Labour Day long weekend.

The free Swanston St parade from 11-12am on the 12th of March is the highlight for kids. The Waterfest (link below) runs for all three days with carnival rides, the Moomba Masters international water ski championship (with ski jumping) and a birdman rally. Note that at the time or writing the full Waterfest program of events is not appearing on the website.

For overseas or interstate visitors it is an excellent opportunity to combine the Moomba weekend with the Melbourne Grand Prix events starting the following Thursday and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Nowhere near as popular as it was years ago. I barely gets any publicity apart from a 15 sec spot on the News.
