BataV is correct but Snooksvil said the right thing to answer ur question. check it with BT website and it will give the optimum speed you will get depending on your post code.
but if you are ask in general what is the maximum speed you can ever have i believe the answer would be 8Mb/Sec.

Depends on the connection type. Dial-up modems up to 56Kbit, ISDN 128Kbit, ADSL faster than that.
To get actual speed, divide Kbits with 10-12, depends on the protocol and type of information downloaded.

I think you'd be better off asking your service provider, rather than people on here. There's too much guess work involved.
