I know XP Pro installs a network so I can juts plug into my router for broadband. I can't do this with XP Home but does Media Edition have this facility?

not install, but configure; and yes it does. all WinXP based systems do. tho you do not need to configure one if you have a router. you should be able to just plug the computers in, enable printer/file sharing and share folders.

Yes, I have Windows XP Media Edition installed in my laptop and it automatically detects either wireless newtork or wired network whenever I enable wi-fi or plug the network cable into my ethernet port.

yes. if XP pro has it then XP Media Center Edition will. i have media center edition on my home computer, and it is xp home and xp pro combined and then the added media center extras.

When you're doing the windows setup it should offer to give you networking options.
