I've always had good success at gaining control of Australia - there's only one way in or out. Mount your armies and move north
to Japan. Put in a defensible amount of amries and invade the US. Move south to Brazil. Then mount up and go after North Africa. Trying to gain control of Europe/Africa/Asia early in the game only leads to drefeat because there are so many ways in and out and too many perimeters to defend. That's why I like to start out in Australia - one way in and out (easy to defend).

If there are several players you need to play conservatively.Take Australia, Create a sold base there then slowly expand into Asia. Don't be too aggressive early. Just maintain Australia and a very small foothold in Asia to act as a buffer. You should be content to win one country a turn to get your card, and otherwise maintain the status quo. That is by far the best strategy in Risk. Usually the others will kind of leave you alone for a while since you are isolated and don't pose a threat. Always try to keep as few different players adjoining you as possible. The only problem is if someone else is determined to take australia as well. Then you have to either bluff him into playing elsewhere or do so yourself.

Firstly always keep quiet! Don't let your friends see that you have a plan. Sometimes I like to make as if I can't play and I just mess around, well at least that's what I make it seem the whole time building up armies in different places. You have to keep a friendly attitude otherwise the other players are going to want to get you off the map and therefore will attack you alot. Make treaties with your friends, eg. 'I wont attack you there if you don't attack me here', and there has to be a full turns notice before breaking that treaty. The pro about having that treaty is that your opponent will feel safe next to you and therefore will not watch that spot too much, while you have that same sense of safety but at the same time build yourself up to become strong. A silent killer is always the best :) Good luck!

Risk has changed quite a bit over the years it is not the same game I played as a kid. I have a current version but we found it so complicated now that it is not really any fun any more. My basic strategy is the same as Alexander The Great's. Build a huge expeditionary force and gather them in one country. Then using the awesome power of this force conquer each country toppling them like dominos leaving only a small occupying force behind as you move on to the next country. Protect your rear flank and don't spread your forces thin.

They key to winning in RISK is control of the US. It makes an incredible bastion for protection and is relatively easily defended.
If you can control N. America you have a good chance of winning - you can do a run down S. America, gaining its resources and then move into (as I recall) Kamchatka and then do a run either down into Australia and the rest of the Pacific coast, or on into the rest of Eurasia...
I've never lost using that strategy...

when choosing initial placement of pieces try and concentrate in one continent. Australia is weaker, but easier to claim. Personally I usually go for South America. The less routes in the less armies you need to keep stocked at those bordering countries. With South America in hand go into North America... Be ware of players coming in through Alaska... good luck.

The first goal is to acquire a continent that can be HELD. The extra armies you get for a continent or 2 is the key to the game.

Well my buddy Roger Sopha had a strategy that worked pretty darn well every time he played. Play as Japan and attack Pearl Harbor and keep the pain going on the US until you eliminate them.
My bad, I was thinking of Axis and Allies. Risk is a kids game.
