found a gym i like but they want 149 to join, plus the monthly dues That is just silliness. I know it is due to the time of year and many people will pay it, but I do not want to. I do not really want ot wait until March, when they are more desparate for memberships...I am not cheap or dishonest, I just know a rip off when I see one.

Lifestyles by chance? My gym pulled that crap on me. There is usually one day of the month where they waive the enrollment fee and I just happened to walk in that day. I told them that I didn't like high-pressure sales and that I would "think about it". Ever so conveniently, they extended the special another day and called that evening begging me to join.

see if you can get other people from your office to join. if a few of you come in, they might not only drop the entry fee, but give you a package deal. in the same thought, you could try and work it into your companies health plan. that way you could get a corporate discount and no entry fee - and if your company will pay for it, so much the better!
