Indian films are popular abroad for a variety of reasons. One is that they are glamorous feasts for the eyes with beautiful costumes, great music and fantastic dance numbers. Another is that they are true romances where the couple overcome all odds to be together within the context of their families and their households. They are a glimpse into a culture that many people just don't have access to. And then there is the fact that there aren't that many movies that parents and children can watch together happily. There isn't naked women and sex scenes to worry about. Only family values and love. I'm not even touching on the things that all films need (regardless of country of origin) good actors, a good script, a good director and if necessary a good action choreographer.

why Hollywood films are not popular out there?
such a mystery....
The people abroad who watch Indian films are NRI and they feel attached to their country and thus make sure to watch an Indian movie whenever available.
Others prefer to watch Indian movies for the new liking the foreigners have started developing recently for Indian Movies. The stars, the costumes, locale , etc. they surely have become world class.
For indian audience, its nostalgia.
For the foreigners, its a combination of colourful costumes, drama and song[music] & dance found all together in a neat package with attractive faces to boot and some skin show [nowadays].
Its a novelty to them and entertaining too; hence the popularity.
Also nowadays, the makers do so much publicity before the release, that there is bound to be some sort of anticipation before hand. na ????
our indian films hav the culture n traditions which doesnot exist in any other countries abroad which give people a diffrent thing 2 watch out.
Indian films are more of an escapism more than anything, they almost seem too real to be true... they are rich in colour (wardrobe, make-up etc), the choreography and cinematography has greatly improved in the last years and so have their storylines. And you cannot deny the fact that the indians are very beautiful...the whole package is just captivating and mindblowing I guess to the people abroad. I know that's why I like them.
Bcoz western people like Indian Masalas
I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF AND SAY THAT SINCE I FIRST SAW DDLJ FOLLOWED BY LAGAAN I WAS CAPTIVATED BY HINDI FILMS, AAMIR KHAN AND KAJOL!! I RECENTLY WATCHED KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI AND WHAT CAN I SAY I WAS AGAIN ASTOUNDED WITH KAJOL, SHE IS AMAZING AND TO SEE AAMIR KHAN WITH KAJOL IN FANAA, THAT WAS GREAT TO SAY THE LEAST!! THEY ARE THE GIANTS OF INDIAN CINEMA!! INDIAN MOVIES GIVE US WESTENERS A SLICE OF LIFE THAT IS SO COLOURFUL, FULL OF DANCE AND SONG AS WELL AS A ROLLER COASTER OF HUMAN EMOTION!! AT THE END OF KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI I WAS A WRECK!! HOLLOW-WOOD MOVIES HAVE NOT DONE THAT TO ME IN YEARS!!!!!!
WATCHING AN INDIAN MOVIE IS AN EXPERIENCE AND THE MUSIC ADDS A FURTHER DIMENSION. GREAT STUFF!!

For me it was the innocence that I found when I first came across DDLJ. There was not kissing (which gets seriously overdone in western films), there was talk of honor, obedience, purity, and chaste love. Even with the skin showing there is an innocent air to many of the films. Plus the dancing, color, sining, and emotion seemed like a new a refreshing take on films that also seemed to be somehow connected to Hollywood classics such as 'Seven Brides for Seven Brother' and keeps the fairy tale aspect of movies like 'Beauty and the Beast' where the good guys are good, human but good, and you know who the bad guys are. :o)
