I never attended but remember well my cousins that went to one. They consolidated the schools when I was in the 6th grade and remember how emotional it was for some. Just wondering...

Yes, Spils, most of them are gone, as in demolished or used as a gathering place for local clubs. I don't know of any actual old country schools in the USA anymore.

yes, my entire family went to and graduated from a country school in Indiana. the last class to graduate with a diploma from that school was in 1963 as the 1964 class had their diploma from the nearby city school. there were problems with the consolidation at first because we were thought to be " country hicks " by the city kids and they were " city slickers. " for years there was a rivalry between the country schools and the city schools in sports and this rivalry still continues in the old timers who even today find it hard to " root for " the city schools in sports since they played against them even though their children and grand children now attend these city schools.

I attended a one room school house for first and most of second grade. It was the teacher that arrived early to get a fire going. She didn't heat soup. No one stayed to help her clean. A few were taken to the woodshed for an attitude adjustment. The outside bathrooms were awful in the winter time. We moved into a brand new school about April when I was in second grade
