to promote 'democracy' right? and i suppose freedom of speech along with it. also the notion of separation of powers, between the different parts of the government - not to allow the same individuals to decide what people get what posts.

Elections are held to put elected representatives into office. We elect people to run our governments & to represent us (ideally to make decisions which will benefit society as a whole).

If there were no elections, then our leaders could go unchecked, and could do anything they wanted to do with virtually no consequences.

To make people feel as though they have something to say in the way the government is run !!
