The BFG, definitely The BFG. It is about a little girl who lives in an orphanage in London and gets snatched from her bed one night by a man who is a giant. He takes her back to giant land where she sees the other, BIGGER giants who eat children. The giant (BFG=Big Friendly Giant) has to protect her and she goes with him to collect dreams in jars.

My mind immediately went to three - the BFG, Matilda and the Witches. Though I did have a beautiful illustrated edition of the Minpins that I donated to my cousins - I shall kill them if they've got rid of it - that I loved although I think mainly for the amazing pictures.
I think, on reflection, the BFG is my favourite. I don't think it's the first one I read - I was so young that it was read *to* me. It's a wonderfully surreal book - and I think Sophie's friendship with the BFG is beautifully told. There are so many clever ideas and jokes in it, it's just a wonderful and original book. I loved the bit where Sophie reads all the dreams - and a bit that always sticks in my mind is when Sophie is saying how evil the other giants are, and the BFG responds that the pig doesn't want to be eaten, but humans eat them... It was clever because it puts the reader in the uneasy position of sympathising with the giants.

Did you know he invented a valve that is used in brain surgery? It's still used today I believe....

Without a doubt, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a truly magical read when I was a child.
But Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, the awful sequel, is probably my least favourite.
