I have one desktop that by this week will have dsl and I wanted to have internet on my a bit old desktop so my kids can play with it when I am working on the other one.
how can i do this??? i am so confused. Do i need a router and an adapter plus ethernet cable???
I would like to just do it wireless and not deal with having cables going from room to room....Please help I am really so new to this wireless and stuff I am not sure I get it.
Do I just need a wireless (ex Linksys) that I can connect through the usp port (i dont want to open the tower). Then is that it?? Or do I have to have something else on the pc with the dsl connection???

You need to buy a wireless router, netgear is good one, and yes u need network adapter/ethernet cards for both the desktops, without them u wont be able to connect, beside it if u want to make a wireless network than u need a wifi card in place of ethernet cards

OK, step by step:

1) buy a router/firewall with wireless capacity like the linksys you mentioned
2) get a USB wireless card for whatever PC doesn't have a network card
3) you will have to configure the router, most ISPs give instructions on how to do this on their website (it differs slightly by ISP)
4) connect the (configured) router to the ISP modem using the WAN port on the router (you will need a network cable)
5) connect the PC's over the wireless network to the router and thus the internet.

1) DSL connects to modem
2) Modem connects to Wireless Router
3) Wireless adapter connects via USB to each computer.

a. Wireless router linksys or netgear both reliable.
b. Wireless adapter for each of the computers can be the USB type so you don't have to open the cases. I've had good luck w/ linksys or netgear, but trouble w/ Dlink.

A broadband connection can be shared between 2 or more computers using a router . Though wireless connections are becoming popular, a wired connection is usually more secure and faster. The router used for a wired connection is also cheaper. More details at http://fixit.in/shareinternet.html
