Normally I take them for 21 days, have a break for 7 days, and then start again. But that might leave me 'on' over the weekend and it's the first in ages that my partner and I have had free!!

Just do not take a break continue the next pack straight away - there will be no side effects and is safe to do so - however just be aware that you can get slight bleeding called 'spotting' but nothing like a normal period.

EDIT: Sorry now I know why you asked about a 5 day break - if your body is very regular you may find that your period will start just before weds - there is no reason not to only have a 5 day break and if you do come on before weds it should have eased up by the time you see your partner on the weekend - hopefully!

DON'T WORRY THAT YOU HAVE 7 DAYS WITHOUT TAKING A PILL. YOU ARE STILL PROTECTED. IT'S A WHOLE PROCESS, IT'S NOT LIKE A PILL PROTECTS YOU FOR THAT DAY ONLY THAT YOU TAKE IT. YOU CAN EVEN SKIP THE PAUSE AND YOU WON'T HAVE A PERIOD AT ALL. YOU CAN DO IT SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN YOU HAVE SMTH PLANNED AND DON'T WANT YOUR PERIOD TO RUIN IT. WHILE YOU ARE ON PILLS, THE HORMONES IN THEM PREVENT THE EGGS TO DEVELOP IN YOUR OVARIES. SO AT THE END OF THE PACK, WHEN YOU BLEED, THERE IS NO MATURE EGG IN THE BLOOD- THAT'S ONLY THE EXTRA TISSUE THAT FORMS IN YOUR UTERUS SO IF THERE'S AN EGG IT CAN NESTLE THERE. SO YOU CAN'T GET PREGNANT, NOT EVEN DURING THE 7 DAYS PAUSE BETWEEN PACKS, COS THERE'S SIMPLY NO EGG.
