Have you just installed your windows XP Home Edition? If so, I strongly suggest that you reinstall Windows XP HE, then in the disk partitioning process, select FAT 32 filesystem, not NTFS. Also, I highly recommend that you use updated drivers for your hardware devices if they don't pass the XP's Hardware Compatibility List.

Your equipment isn't compatible with XP. XP is the worst operating system in history for not being compatible with earlier versions of Windows hardware & Software. You find that buying new hardware will solve your problem plus increase your performance because if your equipment isn't compatible to XP a hardware upgrade is long over due.
