You can use a tape measure. Or you can go to a shop that sells shirts and ask to be measured.

1.First measure your neck. Put the tape measure around the largest part of your neck, where you would normally wear the collar when your shirt is buttoned. This is your neck size. The neck sizes in dress shirts increment by ½ inch measurements. If you find you are not quite at the half or whole size go to the next half or whole size measurement. You can also adjust this measurement based on comfort level. For instance if you prefer to have a little more room, add ½ inch to this measurement. If you like a more generous fit, add 1 inch to your measurement. For some men keeping one or two fingers between you and the tape measure is alternate way to add the desired inches when determining neck size. Shirts should button all the way. Do not leave open the top button on the shirt. If it feels too tight on you when you button the shirt, it is too small.

Because measuring can be inaccurate (especially if you do it yourself), the best thing to do is to go to a store and try on a few different collar sizes until you find the one that fits best and feels most comfortable.

Even if you get measured properly by a professional, you might still find that the collar feels either too tight or too loose when you try it on (because not all shirts are cut and measured the same way).

I would never buy a shirt based on what I perceive my measurements to be, I always try different sizes in the same item on and decide which is the best fit.

This is why I have small, medium and large clothes in my wardrobe, and a collar size that can be either 15.5, 16 or 16.5 depending on the design of the shirt.

In old English measurements, the shirt collar was measured in 'inches', thus as size 16 was usually called a 16 inch collar. Hope this helps. Take a tape measure and place it around your neck, get a measurement in both inches and centimetres - this should do the trick.

The above is for men's collars.

Use a tape measure and that will give you an idea. If in doubt when shopping always ask at the clothing section and an assistant should be able to help you. Go to somewhere like Mark and Spensers even if it is just to get your neck measured.

Place a tape measure around the middle of your neck, allowing enough room for the tips of two fingers to be inserted comfortably between the tape measure and the neck.
