I guess it's close to 193...There are 192 members in the U.N....but some times a country here and a country there eventually pops up...Its definitely 193 as for today.. Tomorrow ? Who knows... :)

There are also regions which assert their independance, but whose sovereignty is not recognized. The eastern half of Moldova is one - Trans Dniester, they call themselves. They have their own President, print their own money, issue their own passports... Sheriff Tiraspol, Moldova's most successful football (soccer) team is in this region, as are the big steel manufacturing plants. Moldova refuses to allow them to secede.
Georgia has two breakaway regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia - not officially recognized by the rest of the world.
Another region asserting its sovereignty is Western Sahara - not recognized by its powerful neighbour, Morocco.
As has been observed, Taiwan is a thorny issue - officially recognize it and incur the wrath of China!
