ok..i do NOT know what everyone else is talking about...i bred hammies for YEARS and if u do that..it will 1. try to bite you and 2. will become extremely fearful of you 3. will definatly hurt you....hammie mums dont scruff they pick up the whole baby in their mouth and hold them..they dont scruff them...im not sure why you would want to hold it like that anyways...its much better to train the hammy to walk onto your hand....if you want to know the best way to hold a hamster you can email and ill help you out but DO NOT HOLD IT BY THE NECK

usualy scruffing and animal (holding the excess fur and skin at the back of the neck) causes no harm but when lifting or moving them you must support the whoul body weight by putting a hand under it rump. just lifting by the scruff and not doing this may hurt them.

It shouldn't, but they will squirm when you do because they don't have anything under their feet. A better idea is just to let them sit in the palm of your hand. You can get them used to it by putting their fave treat in the palm of your hand. While they're munching away, you can carry them across the room, or you can even try carry them around in your shirt pocket. Just be patient, it will take some time to get them to trust you enough to do this.

no, its called scruffing. by grabbing the animals scruff, depending on age it is a way to calm young animals down. when my rats were babies, they used to get scared of company when they got too loud, so i would just scruff them and kindof cradle them. it always calmed them down. if it is an older hampster, it wont be confortable but it still wont hurt it. just put a finger under its hind legs to make it feel a bit more secure.
