do they have step pyramids in eqypt or in mexico. ok, i may be wrong but there is be only one step pyramid in eqypt.
the first, and probably the only step pyramid ever completed, is that of King Netjerykhet Djoser at Saqqara.
it was used as a royal tomb. after that, the step design abandoned and the later pyramids had smooth sides.
now, in mexico, the step pyramids were used as sacrificial temples for the gods and were the priests performed ceremonies and offerings to the gods.

The Step Pyramid was the first pyramid. Before that time, clay slabs (Mastavas) were placed above the dead to keep animals from desicrating the bodies. The Pharoah's engineer and top advisor had the idea of stacking Mastavas and creating a large structure for the Pharoah to be buried in. He used stone, making the Step Pyramid the first large stone structure. After that, other pyramids improved on the design. The Bent Pyramid was next. About halfway through the construction, the foundation started to crumble because of the excessive weight. To compensate, the builders changed the angle of the pyramid, giving it its "bent" appearance. The first true pyramid was the Red Pyramid. It was built of red stone, causing it to give off a reddish cast in the mornings and evenings.
I'm not sure if it's true for the earlier pyramids, but later pyramids, such as those on the Giza Plateau, were also public works projects. They were not built by slave labor, as was once believed, but by Egyptians themselves, especially farmers who were unable to farm while the Nile flooded. Many gravesites of workers have been found on the Giza Plateau. Not only do many of the paintings brag about their participation, but many of the bodies show evidence of extremely hard labor, meaning they were not just supervisors. There is even evidence that they received very good food and medical treatment, which would not be the case if they were slaves. Finally, the Pharoah was considered to be a god. By building the pyramids, Egyptians believed they were performing a religious function--providing a home for their god in the afterlife.

1. They were created as tombs for their kings
2. They primarily represent the king's power and wealth on earth in the same way as burial mounds in Britain function. There may be other religious significance to them that we are not aware of.
3. I'm not sure they were important in the lives of the Ancient Egyptians, other than to those who had to build them.
PS. There is, in fact, only one step pyramid in Egypt - that of King Djoser built in 2630BCE by the architect Imhotep at Saqqara. The pyramid came about simply by building a mastaba then gradually constructing one on top of each other. The burial chamber is underground beneath the pyramid.

1.) only one so-called step pyramid in egypt exists. it is presumed to have been built to house the body of the dead pharao. the other pyramids contained no bodies so it is unclear what their original purpose was.
2.) it possibly represents the rays of the sun.
3.) the inside of the step pyramid contains astronomical and astrological information about the history of the pharao from conception to god-star.
