The step pyramid at Saqqara in Egypt was created as a tomb for King Djoser in 2630BCE by his architect, Imhotep.

The area around the pyramid also had religious significance before and after the death of the king, so the pyramid served as the focal point of this open area.

The Pyramids were made as tombs for Pharaohs. The Pharaoh was the leader of Egypt, much like a King. Before they died, they usually made a pyramid in order to leave their legacy, so to speak. The first step pyramid was made for King Djoser over 4600 years ago.

Hope this helps.
