Dreamcatchers can be traced back to the 1800’s, with unknown specific origins. The dreamcatcher is a tool used by various Native American Indian tribes to separate the bad, from the good. Hung above the bed, a dreamcatcher protects the sleeper from bad dreams and negative influences. In addition, some tribes believe that dreamcatchers also represent the circle of life. With birth starting at the outer rim, the web represents the cycles of life with old age returning a person back to an infant life state, completing the circle.
Throughout one’s life, negative influences will have an adverse effect on one’s spirit. The Dream Catcher serves as a spiritual protector, by separating the positive hopes and dreams from these adverse influences. Some believe dreamcatchers let the good dreams pass though while trapping and destroying the bad (much like a spider and it’s prey). Others believe the bad pass through the center hole while the good are preserved in the web (one’s life).

A Dreamcatcher is an Indian myth and belief, whichever, however you want to look at it. It looks like a big web basically with strands of feathers flowing down off of it. The story of the Dreamcatcher is to hang them on the wall above your bed. The web is supposed to catch all your bad dreams and filter them so only the good dreams flow through and drip down the feathers to you while your sleeping. The bad dreams are caught and the morning light dissolve them entirely. It's an American Indian belief, which is in my heritage. I bought some from the Dollar Tree, believe it or not and they're very nice. Sometimes you can find them in mail order catalogs such as Collections etc, and the Lakeside Collections, and other various ordering catalogs. Or go to your shopping mall, they usually have store islands in the middle of malls that sell Indian items. These are real Indian items, not to be confused with Indonesian, may people mistake that. Also you can surf the web, go to things like NativeAmericanDreamcatchers.com and things to that nature. Hope this gives you a better idea. Some come in different shapes, my daugheter has one that is a pink heart and pink and white feathers, they come in a variety.

A dreamcatcher is Native American and originally consisted of a small hoop traditionally made of the wood of the willow that grows in swampy or damp places. Basswood fiber was then strung on the willow hoop in one of two patterns, either a spiderweb pattern or a fishnet pattern. An owl feather was tied to the bottom of it and it was hung over a person's bed. The legend is that when the person is sleeping, the dreamcatcher catches the bad dreams and destroys them, and the good dreams are waved through the center hole in the dreamcatcher by the feather. Modern dreamcatchers are made of many materials in a lot of different designs. I make dreamcatchers myself, both the traditional ones and fully beaded ones, check my beaded ones out at my ebay store link below.
