The kind of cell division which is common in reproduction is called meiosis. The cells contain 46 chromosomes, and then split in a process called meiosis, leaving 23 chromosomes in each egg. The same thing happens in males, giving 23 chromosomes in each sperm. When the sperm and egg unite, the genetic information combines, again resulting in 46 chromosomes.
