why do you think girls are not allowed to do several things in spite of saying that we live in "21st" century? on the broader aspect girls are leading in many fields but in day to day life its not so. we say times are changing but are they really? we say there is no discrimination between girls and boys? then why is the government giving lease to girls i think this itself leads to the discrimination!
what do you say?

what i exactly wanted to say was about India and the example of giving lease is that in central government schools (kvs)
there is no fees for a single girl child and even the fees for boys is more than that of the girls.

"Giving lease to girls?" What government is this, and what sort of lease?

Yes, things really have changed. I will be sixty this year, and I have seen very rapid changes in my lifetime. When I was a kid, the only women who had careers (not just jobs, something a working class woman often had out of necessity) were unmarried or were widows carrying on their dead husband's business. At the very least, a woman did not work while her children were too young to go to school. Day care was not yet a term, but some few pitiable women had to work and so left their babies with family. To leave a child too young to go to school with relative strangers was almost unheard-of.

Another thing is clothing. Take a good look at Tom Tierney's paper dolls and coloring books about fashion. Do you realize under all that (right up to the sixties, at least) was almost always a girdle and stockings (not pantyhose) that cut into your thighs and were always, always uncomfortable on anyone other than perhaps a fashion model slim woman. Wearing slacks was being super casual, such as Saturday doing chores. And to go without a bra was a major revolution in the sixties; prior to that, it was the sort of thing you only did if you were for rent. Same with skirts short enough to show the tops of your stockings when you bent over.

Then there's finances. Do you know how recently it was simply not possible for a married woman to have a credit account (before credit cards) in her own name, separate from her husband's credit? She might have one at a women's clothing store or other decidedly female-oriented business, but her husband was still responsible for paying it.

And the only women in the military were nurses and clerical workers. They were usually assumed to be lesbians just because they were willing to live in a barracks with other women and not be married or dating someone who would never permit them to leave home.

Yes, things have changed a good bit. In fact, in many ways women now have the advantage over men, since the "affirmative action" and related programs which have given preferential treatment to women.

Sorry - giving what to girls? I think in the Uk at least, girls can do pretty well whatever they want now. Can you give us examples of what you mean?
