The elements are arranged according to atomic number which is the number of protons and at times electrons. Elements occurring in the same group have similar properties and thus react in like fashions. The group number designates the number of valence electrons that an atom of that element possesses.

They are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic number.They r arranged in such a way that the properties of each element is related to one another.All the properties r depended on the number of the valence electrons

It's arranged by atomic weight, and I believe the collumns give a reference to electron arrangement, as well.

Pretty handy if you know how to read it.

**** take a 2 semester of chemistry and you will know... trust me the way it is arranged i am glad it is cause it makes alot of things easier to memorize!!!!
