I was talking to a friend today who says that he has no idea what he wants to do with his life. I find this incredibly hard to believe. He says that he thinks about it often, but just doesn't know. All he knows is that he wants "to be able to show [he's] not useless."
Personally, I find that most people who say that they dont know what they want to do, or dont even try to do anything at all, are afraid that they'll choose the wrong thing. I also find that it is easy to say that you don't know as a cover up for being lazy and, especially in his case, wanting to continue to sit around and play video games until 4 am instead of working towards a real goal and starting a real career.
I am just looking for some external perspective on this. Thanks!

Most importantly share your dreams and aspirations with the right kind of people.Most of them would put you down but people who are self made will always understand your feelings.

That was me about 10 years ago. I had no interest in school and no idea what I wanted to do. My reason for doing nothing was because it was too hard to get started and low self esteem.
Eventually boredom and a lack of $'s forced me to try a job in admin. I was actually really good at it! Now I am a business manager, earning a great salary and went back to uni as a mature student. I still 'don't know what I want to do when I grow up!'. Sometimes we look for something that isn't there (or I havent found it yet!)
I think you friend probably needs to get into the world to see what's on offer. Start at the start, and enjoy the journey - not the end.

What you said could be true. However, for some people it is just plain hard to decide what they want in life. If it is clear cut for you, it doesn't have to be that way for others. I think in time, your friend maybe able to make up his mind and find something he could be useful in doing. You can also help if you want by offering suggestions.

It is possible that that person is depressed. Without a purpose he may just go on doing nothing. He has to want to change, you can't talk him into it. About all you can do is try and get him out. Its not likely that he is lazy.
