My 12 year old daughter got a cell phone for her birthday (her dad gave it to her and we are divorced and I wasn't consulted first.) I'd say it was more of a mistake than not. The first month, she ran up a huge bill because she didn't understand how her minutes worked. Last month, she got caught having a somewhat innapropriate conversation with a boy and is now grounded from the phone. While it's nice to know that she can reach us whenever and wherever she needs to, there is a downside, as there are pros and cons to absolutely anything.
I'd recommend getting her the phone because it's a good safety precaution and a good way to help teach responsibility. However, make sure she has a clear understanding of the rules and expectations upfront, and if she violates them, show her you mean BUSINESS. Mom giveth, and Mom taketh away. The decision is certainly reversible if she doesn't use it responsibly.

Well if i were you i would get her a pre-paid phone from sprint and make her pay for the pre paid card out of her money. (so she wont abuse the privilege and drive your bill up) One reason you might like this idea is when she is away from home she always has a way to call you in case of an emergency. My husband works for sprint, kids love texting and it drives bills threw the roof so be careful with giving her a phone with a plan. Best of luck.

I didn't have a cell phone until I was over 40, but I had a TV growing up when the people before me didn't. I think you could make an argument either way, but I think if I were a parent it would be hard to deny them the technology of the day, if they're repsonsible at all.

Kids these days are said "yes" to way too much, so I can't help you out. Also, I suspect you're the 12 YO, not the mom!

There are phone plans out there where they let you monitor the calls, and how many minutes they can use. Id say, let her have it. If she runs the alotted minutes up, oh well. It might teach her a lil bit of responsibility too.

i never needed one until i was 21. and i could probably get by without mine if i had to, like i did for the first 21 years of my life.
maybe get her one for emergencies, but don't let her get text messaging, that stuff is garbage.

when she goes to the mall or to a friends house you can always call her or she can call you, you will always know where she is, and plus cingular has that GO phone and i think SPRINT might have something like that, theres no contract and you get plenty of minutes and i think free weekends, and of course, EVERYBODY ELSE HAS ONE!!!

Tell her "no" kids and teenagers don't need cell phones or pagers unless they are drug dealers, drug users or prostitutes.
