Try out different brands for sure. I like Stilla and M.A.C. for eye shadow. I also like Clairins. Used it for years. I recently bought a Lancome eye shadow and it bothered my eyes so i took it back.
Don't use the cheap stuff! The less expensive make up is not as good.
If you are talking skin care, I am certain that the less expensive products are just as good as the expensive ones. IE: facial toner, moisturizer etc. Compare the ingredients, they are almost the exact same. Believe me...I used to spend a ton on skincare products from department stores such as Nordstroms, Saks, Nieman Marcus. Waste of money in my opinion.

Basically you can't go wrong with MAC, Stilla, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Clairins etc but you have to see what is right for you.

Goodluck!

every brand has something that they are good at and known for. personally, the pricey stuff is better at foundation, concealer and powder. eyeshadow, blush, lipstick, eyeliners, mascara can be great from both pricey and cheap lines. here are some of my favs:

liquide foundation: giorgio armani or laura mercier
concealer: laura mercier since it has 2 tones in the compact and also chantecaille for the texture
powder: laura mercier or chantecaille
stick foundation: bobbi brown
two in one powder foundation: aveda
skin primer: laura mercier
tinted moisturizer: laura mercier (truly the only one that works)
blush: nars orgasm and benifit's benetint suits everyone
lipstick: nars dolce vita
mascara: maybelline great lash, l'oreal voluminous, lancome definicil, prescriptive super false lash
eyeshadow: all brands depending on the colour i like....l'oreal in the drug store is high in pigment so what you see is what you will get whereas the other brands are a little lighter when you put it one. i prefer the bobbi brown compact since it is natural and the colours all work together. i like laura mercier's midnight blue with the sparkle as an eyeliner even though it is a shaow. mac is reasonable and true in pigment.

the best tip is good brushes. they make a huge difference in terms of how the makeup looks on the skin. that is the difference between make up done at home and that done by pros.

if you have to invest in makeup, my suggestion is in the foundation, concealer, powder and brushes. the foundation is what gives you great skin and a wonderful base for the makeup. the brushes make the makeup look wonderful....even the cheap stuff.

cheap out on the mascara, lipstick and gloss. they are the most disposable in the sense of how long it last and trends.

There is no best brand really, every brand has good-great products & bad products, high & low end. I will admit that higher end foundations are better than cheapo products. Everybody seems to love Mac, but some stuff sucks just like any other line. Prestige & Milani have a good range of products you can find at the drugstore for shadows. Milani luminous blush is also a knock-off for Nars orgasm blush. L'oreal voluminous & Max Factor lash perfection are great mascaras too found at the drugstore. Just try stuff out. Try to make sure wherever you buy it from that you can return it if you don't like it/doesn't suit you.

i suggest u be selective.

im on a tight budget so id go for the cheapest eye shadows, lip glosses, brushes but then splash about more on mascara foundation and concealers.
basically splash out on the stuff u need more. cheap mascara damages ur eyelashes and cheap foundation might coz break outs.

also u should be aware that there are some good brands which are not expensive at all. i like rimmel and max factor they are pretty good and very cheap compared to other brands

Bodyshop is good quality but i dont like their concealers and foundations
my favourite mascara is loreal

I really believe in whats your preference. There is good ones and bad ones and ones that do more damage. Try experimenting or wearing some of the stuff the ppl above me suggested. I personally wear loads of clinique, estee lauder, bobbi brown, and lancome.

This doesn't mean I don't use stuff you find in your local drug store. Sometimes I use the neutrogena makeup, covergirl liners and mascara, loreal is great, and nyc eyeliner. I totally support in going crazy with it lol.

my opinion....
1. best shades MAC and Chanel
2. best mascara Maximeyes and Diorshow from Dior
3. best lipstick Rouge Pur from Yves Saint Laurent (colour resists better then Chanel and is not drying)
4. best gloss Golden Gloss from YSL too
5 Foundations Estee Lauder and Clinique

Don't use the cheap stuff on your face. Sure, you might save money on the short run but in the LONG RUN, your face might be messed up for good!

whatever you do dont buy the cheap stuff. it wont last long and you will most likley get a skin irritation. invest in good expensive make-up and it will last long and look the best. i myself love loreal, bobbi brown, MAC,Estee Lauder,Maxfactor,Jane Iredale,Lancome, and maybelline.

I'm very satisfied with Bourjois. It's cheaper version of Chanel.
