Actually, most web sites I have visited are as a result of people giving me a link and saying how much they liked it. If I'm looking for specific information, I normally go to wikipedia. If I am looking for a supplier to buy something from, I put the name of the product in the Yahoo search and STAND BACK! Normally there are a great many responses, and I take the first one that looks like it's a company's home page. That is, it reads www.companyname.com, or maybe with /index on the end.
But my "navigation," if you want to call it that, is the follow-your-nose method.

Originally it was so I could access information I need for my course, but due to holidays I started looking up other things of interest and stumbled onto Yahoo Answers, my other favourite site is the Tickle.com I love doing the Phd. tests. Still learning all about internet terms and such so can't answer the navigation question clearly.

I normally look up at food and online games websites.
What makes a website attractive for me, is of course the colour coordination. And of course the use of flash. And the faded music, whereby you can choose which tone you like to hear throughout your stay in the website.
I like the information to be as organised as possible....and not to many navigational buttons. I like something dynamic but at the same time, efficient and easy to navigate.

A link with a question, or moving picture. Or naked, lude, funny, or strange pictures certainly catch the eye. It's true, even if you don't like that stuff! But graphics that move are good. Advertisements detract from the nature of the site and its eye-friendly-ness. Yellow and bright neon colors can look harsh on computer screens for backgrounds, but are ok for occasional font usage.
