Probably because in a lot of European countries if someone dies (particularly a partner, child or parent) it is the custom to wear black. Some wear black for the rest of their lives. Then you have Henry Ford - he said when asked what color car can one have "Any colour so long as it is black". People wear black armbands as a sign of respect for someone who has died. A person can be in a 'black' mood, which doesn't mean 'happy'. Then there is the old maxim for fashion - wear black - goes with anything. Black for some reason is the color associated with death; which is why so many people wear it to funerals. Read a book once where a couple went out into the "silky black of the night to do what they couldn't do in the harsh light of the day"! (Leave that to your imagination). The Aborigines say that there's nothing in the black of night that isn't there at the rise of the sun. I think it's particularly European because they have very long winters!

I don't know that black is a symbol for melancholy. I thought you were blue when you were sad.

Only in some cultures it may mean so. Black is associated with power. Some cultures like Hindus, it is auspicious. So it differs from culture to culture.
