yes you can. CD-RW is what you should look for (you will also find "Combo drive" or similar, meaning that the drive can burn cds and read dvds). my advice would be to look for a model with DVD-RW. with that, you will be able to also burn DVDs and the extra money that you will have to pay is very little.
my answer is based on buying a new laptop, of course.
if you already have one and want to know its capabilities, double click "My Computer" and see the type of the drive. if it says CD/RW, then you can burn cds. look for CD-R media. the RW are rewritables (and more expensive).

It really all depends what kind of computer it is, and what software/op system you are running. In laptops, usually models made 1990-2001 have shown to overheat very easily. With that said, when importing a dvd or cd, the motor, and drive has to work harder, hense more heat. Some of these older laptops have a safty off mode. Rec: Run Norton System works (all of the plugins) and see if it could be a software glich. If that dosn't work or show any improvement, I would say to take it to a expert (stay away from the geek squad....honestly they don't know as much as most people think....based off of experience). Take it to a suitable business that can help look over the mainframe and interworking to see if their might be a problem.

You can buy an external drive also. Especially if you have a free USB port on your laptop.
