4 pairs = $7.20.
The shopkeeper sold (12 + 18) = 30 such pairs.

Set up a ratio:
4 pairs / 7.20 = 30 pairs / x;

Solve for "x":
4 x = 30 (7.20);
x = 30 (7.20) / 4;
x = 54.00;

Note: You can also find the price of individual pair (7.20 / 4) and multiply it by pairs of socks sold (12 + 18) = 30 pairs.

You'll get:
(7.20 / 4) (30) = 54.00

The shopkeeper collected $54.00 altogether from the two customers.

Do it in parts...

Find how much it costs for a single pair of socks...

$7.20/4 pairs = $1.80 per pair

Add the customers amount of pairs together...

12 + 18 = 30

And since I am doing this in my head, Im going to break this down into two different parts...

$1 x 30 = $30

$0.10 x 30 = $3 x 2 = $6 ($1 - $0.20 = $0.80) vvv

$30 + $30 - $6 = $54

The shopkeeper collected $54 from the customers' transactions.

Hope this helps!

2 ways to approach this
1. How much does one pair cost ($7.20/4) x 30 pairs (18+12)
OR
2. 4 pairs/ 7.20 = 30/x;
4x =30 x 7.20, divide both sides by four and x = the cost of 30 pairs

4 pairs sell for $7.20

12 pair sell for 12 x 7.2 divided by 4 = 21.60

18 pair sell for 18 x 7.2 divided by 4 = 32.40

He collected $54.00

4 pairs costs $7.20
