If u using a yahoo id then the smiley near the id is highlighted (yellow colour) means that person is online . if its disabled thn that guy is offline
in Y mesemger if any body signs in a invisible then
the Smiley is disabled
so u cant know his status...

I'm not completely sure i fully understand your question, but i'm asuming you want to know if someone else is using the internet. And the only way to do that is to contact them using some internet network. Otherwise, i have no clue.

You can go to http://members.yahoo.co.in and click the advanced serach link and give the details and it will search for ID's and tell if they are online or not.
If they are in invisible mode they will appear as offline only.
