Computers can talk to each other over phone lines. The "phone numbers" are isp addresses, and each computer has to have one.

You can explain Internet to a layman without much technical details.Just explain him that as you contact any person through phone to communicate a message or seek required advice you need, in a same way you can access any information on any subject by getting access through Internet by means of computer.

Having been raised a farmer myself before becomming a web designer, this question should be easy. The Internet could be described as a phone, you dial the number(web address) and then you are connected to the information source(web site). As far as describing the actual computer and how it operates would be fairly hard. I have still been unsucessful in describing my job to my hillybilly family but a good start would be describing it as a huge calculator that can perform more than simple mathematics.

The Internet is based on the telephone system. When you type an address into the address bar and hit Go, the computer calls the Internet Service Provider's nearest server (which is like a switchboard) and asks to be connected with the site that you want. Your ISP's server calls the server that handles calls for the desired site and asks to be connected to the site. Then the website is temporarily copied to your computer where you can view it.
