In Final Fantasy IX, is it possible to defeat the Silver Dragon in such a way that I don't have to kill it?

I feel kinda bad to have to kill the Silver Dragon in Disc 3, is there an alternative way to defeat it so it doesn't have to die?

The Silver Dragon must be killed-there is no way of defeating him without killing him.

BTW, you won't feel so bad if the dragon starts killing you, which it is more then capable of.
