I'm a contract teacher in Japan. I'm not sure how far it is to any of the places I work, but my average 1-way commute is about 90 minutes. That's not unusual here; actually it's probably about average. So I spend about 6~7 hours a day in the classroom and 3~4 hours a day on public transportation. There are days I'd kill for a 17-mile drive! Just don't forget your tunes!

My fiancee drives 35 miles to work every day and a lot of people in the oil field drive that far, if not further to work. But it depends on the pay scale as well...we have a small town 17 miles from us...(the county seat, to be exact) and I wouldn't spend gas money to drive there unless the pay was quite a bit above min. wage.

Depends. How bad is the traffic? 17 miles on a highway going 65mph is pretty good. 17 miles bumper to bumper in a busy street... bad.

No, I'd take it over what I have to drive. It's 35 miles to my job, so I commute 70 miles a day.
