[9.29] Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.

This is one example of the way islam seems to be the opposite of civilization. Is it a fantasy to think that peace is possible? If so, how? If not, what is the solution?

Please, no hateful answers. I am looking for truth, not agreement. I would like to understand how a relatively civilized nation can deal with those who claim to believe the Koran.

If you are looking for truth you wont get it. There is precedence though. Xtianity started this way and eventually it learnt to accept civilization-as you would like to call it. Maybe just maybe, the extremists like Osama and his clonies will learn to respect the world order.

The problem isn't Islam but cultural and political beliefs of certain countries, and of course, American interference, the history of British and French colonialism, the fall of the Ottoman Empire, an absolute mess that was, etc.. There are internal and external problems that won't be rectified through war. I do not agree with the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq. We have factored into this as Westerners by being too aggressive with force in the Middle East, giving Islam a bad name, not solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and not offering aid and support for democratic reform.

We have also interfered with different cultures and religions with some disastrous results, e.g. America's reinstatement of the Shah in Iran and interference of the C.I.A. that led to the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini. We have exploited Iraq and Kuwait's oil for our own benefit. America also made a mess out of Libya unjustifiably.

I don't see the option as plausible Islam and civilization are diametrically opposed . the only hope for a chance at a better future world is to put all religions in their proper place the trash can.
peace out

The idea is to not take things literally, whether it be in the Koran, the Bible, or whatever book one bases his or her religion off of. "Fight" can mean fight against their influence upon you, fight them with fists or guns, fight them with words...

Or, since all of these books began as word of mouth and have had several translations, it could mean something completely different!

You make your own choices in life. One cannot blame religion for one's actions. :-)
