Major impact - I grew up in 70s and my parents played that record over and over.

My religious upbringing in the 70s was from musicals to be honest - when I was singing Hosana Heysana Zanna Zanna ho - from Jesus Christ Superstar - my catholic roomate thought it was so sacreligious - honestly.

It captured both hippy feeling and rock in one - great over all

I wasn't really into that when it happened, but I was just reviewing the whole thing to present as a retreat for Holy Week and I found some really ignorant statements: I mean Jesus would just NEVER say stuff implying He was disobedient, and Judas was way out of hand. As a Catholic, I felt sad that Jesus and His Greatest Act of Love, dying on the Cross, was portrayed in such a disrespectful and ignorant way. The worst was that in the end, there is no hope. They ask if the whole Savior thing was worth it? Maybe not, thay say. How can anyone come to that terrible and heretical conclusion?!

I was barely in grade school at the end of that decade, and while I think it was big then, I think its impact waned over time. It has grown more dated than other plays over time (note the semi-recent successful update of Chicago). The biggest impact it made was as a stepping stone to broadway for recent Kennedy Center honoree Andrew Lloyd Weber. His operatic-rock style began with this.

My aunt who was a Sunday school teacher always showed her 7th grade class this movie because as she put it "it tells the story of the crucifixion and it will hold their interest" All I really remember is King Harod throwing bagels at Jesus.
