i bought colored envelopes because i need to send invitaions can i mail them or do they have to be plain white?

Yes you can use them the post office will accept colored envelopes.

If you live in the USA, colored envelopes are OK.

Any color is fine as long as the address is legible. Lighter colors work better in automatic sorting machines.
