My young son pulled out the CD tray all the way so that it is disconnected from the computer. It feels as if I might break if I try to push it back in. Has anyone done this successfully?

no one has
because it is broken and it needs to be in stabke if the disc is to rotate nicely
so u should get a maintenance guy to look at it and fix a new disc drive

Yes, but there's no guarantee that it'll work. It really depends on the CD drive model, and whether anything inside the drive got bent or snapped off when the tray got yoinked.

You've definitely got the right idea in that you don't want to force it back in. Many CD drives' trays can be safely reinserted if you remove the front cover. Unfortunately this usually means you have to take the drive out of your PC first:

1. Turn off your PC
2. Unplug the power cord
3. Ground yourself electrically
4. Open up the PC's case
5. Unplug the two (or three) wires from the back of the CD drive
6. Using a non-magnetic Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the CD drive from the computer
7. Remove the cover from the front of the drive
8. Reinsert the tray... how exactly this step goes depends on the model

Aaaah that's tricky if its disconnected!!! I think its broken. Its better to get a new one. CD / DVD drives are quite cheap nowadays.
