hey all, im getting new stuff for my computer but theres 2 that i think would be good, theres a pentium D Dual Core 945 2x2mb L2 cache 3.4ghz... (what ever that means) OR Pentium 4 541 3.20 ghz 1mb L2 cache. Which would be better for games like battlefield 2, please be a bit clear coz i dont know much about this stuff lol.

The dual core unit will dance circles around the Pentium 4.

It has 2 processor cores (like having 2 CPUs) & has 4 times the amount of cache memory.... no contest.

The P4 has a similar clock speed, however, it processes far less data per cycle than the Dual Core unit.

Simple Analogy:

You have to deliver 10,000 pizzas ....what would you choose :

- a honda civic than goes 100mph
or
- a tractor trailer that goes only 20mph

Get the idea ... when doing a big job (like running serious apps or games) how fast you are going is not as relevant as how much data you can carry at that speed.

Hope this helps (even a little).

Philip T

ok you need to look at both the cache and the Ghz (Mhz) of your CPU.
without knowing what you do with your computer the only person who can tell you what is best for you is you.
if you do not know about this i'd suggest you either go to a local reputable engineer or shop they will be best placed to talk you through what you need.
P4 is an older and slower processor than the pentium D dual core, if you need all the multitasking of a dual core processor such as gaming while having your email monitored in the back ground or downloading files and gaming then the dual core may be right for you.
if you only browse the web with occasional downloads and rarely multitask i'd suggest the pentium 4. although i'm not a fan of INTEL chips. I prefer the stability provided with AMD cpus.
you should also get the fastest ram possible for your motherboard.
also getting the right CPU to fit your motherboard is VITAL. you will also need a PSU that has typically at least 20% more power than your entire hardware requires (this will aid in system stability). (speaking from personal experiance).
if you are in to gaming then a high end graphics card can cost over £500. as can getting a blue ray capable DVD burner.
to be honest both of those CPUs will run with almost no noticable difference in speed. the only difference will be the number of tasks you can have your computer run at the same time.
good luck.
so much info for a first time upgrader to know it should not be attempted if you have not got a clue what you are doing.
i'd sugest further reading at www.intel.com and www.amd.com

go with the Pentium D 945 3.4ghz processor it would be a lot better for games..

the pentium D is a dual core processor that has 2 seperate processors on the chip and each core has 2MB of L2 cache each hence the 2 x 2MB, so to communicate with each other it has to go outside of the processor to the motherboard and back in the processor to get to the other core.

the pentium 4 541 3.2ghz with HT is a single core processor that uses hyper-threading to multi-task information

The Pentium D is definitely the best. Its got a higher processing speed which 3.4 GHz and a huge cache memory which comes to 4 mb. And that my boy is a lot. In simple terms it means that your processor has more "working space." SO, you can be sure it will eat anything you throw at it.

It will smoothly handle any game you want to play say for the next 2 to 3 years, if not 5 or more.

It's GHZ for processor speed. Definitely go with the Pentium D. It is newer and better and faster technology.
If you are playing video games on your system then way more important than the processor is the graphics card. Many games run PRIMARILY on the graphics card, so a good one of those will go a llllooong way. Many of the lower end cards make the newer 3D intense games almost unplayable. Plus, if you get a decent card, you're system will be ready to play the games of the future. You will want to do some research on the card as well.

Ghz is how fast the number crunches numbers and cache is how much of the crunched numbers are stored. If I was you I'd not worry about this. I'd just buy more RAM (be sure you got the right type) and a graphics card (be sure you got the right type). But really to answer your question buy the Dual core Pentium D (Do you have the right socket?). I recommend in all to buy more RAM and you will be fine.
