is it the fattest pig?
meatiest cow/bull?
healthiest lamb?
what do judges look at when they are put into a competition for a cow, sheep, pig, lamb, chicken etc? the above are just guesses.

when showing farm animals it's like dogs. the judges look for proper conformation that breeds standard. there are many different types of breeds of cows, pigs, lambs etc...they are not judged on how much we can eat off of them. they are judged on how well the conform to the breed standard.

While there are many livestock shows for pedigree animals (where each breed is judged on how well they conform to the breed standard), there are also shows dedicated to judging butchers animals. This is where stock are judged on their suitability as "prime" butchers animals. This means a well balanced animal which is full of meat throughout, especially in the hind quarter, showing a high meat to bone ratio and an even covering of fat, with as little waste in the belly as possible. The majority of stock entered in these shows are cross bred, as these tend to produce a better carcass. The main points to look for in beast, lambs and pigs tend to be the more expensive joints which are at the rear of the animal. Obviously the animal has to be balanced and full of meat throughout to win though, not just have a massive back end!! Judges don't look for the fattest or the healthiest animal. There are also carcass shows, where the judge looks for virtually the same points as live judging except the animals are hanging up. The judge will also take into consideration the colour of the flesh and the fat, and the marbling.

When judging any animal... judges look for absolute perfection. Anything can be seen as a fault from having a tail that is too long to having pads on their feet that aren't perfectly symetrical or aligned. There are so many variations of pigs, cows etc... that the specifics for every animal would be a huge web site... not a simple web answer.

At livestock shows they are judged just like dogs are judged. The judge compares each breed of animal according to the breed standard and awards prizes accordingly. Nothing to do with meatiest, fattest etc.

the judging process is very complicated. My girlfriend is at OSU getting an animal science degree. she is thaking a class on live stock judging, her class book is huge, like an inch and a half thick. so yeah i really can't explain everything. best thing would be to get a book and read up on it...hope you have a lot of time...
