Stereotyping, like profiling, is trying to place an individual into some pre-conceived idea of how a member of that group looks and behaves. It's applying as standard the behavior of individuals to a greater group.
Generalizing is speaking in general terms about a group of objects, people, workers, consumers, whatever in such a way as to over-simplify their characteristics into a couple of short phrases. It is both easy and dangerous to generalize.

Stereotyping is more sinister than generalization.
Regular people, children, ignorant citizens will more or less generalize . This means that their concept and beliefs are based on the little knowledge they have, all fear based concepts of anything new , alien or unknown.
Stereotyping is used by more knowlegeable people, who know how to gain and retain power over the instrumental or deemed outsider group.
Stereotyping defines causal roles of peoples relationships to decisions pertaining to allocation of resources. It can be a way of manipulating behaviour, shutting off certain individuals who pose a threat to an "in-group" by spreading stories and rumors about them in areas of jobs, work force or school heirarchies etc.
The words typically used are: Underperformer, incongruous, incapable, resists authority, complainer, or words to that effect.

Stereotyping is actually going by class and other social things, generalizing is just no offense talking out your a@@.
Like a stereotype would be:" Everyone in the ghetto or in trailer parks are on welfare"( because socially proven: they are)
Generalization would be:"All the elderlies need their licenses revoked" ( Word of mouth being they are not able to drive...Bull$***)

stereotyping is making a statement about someone based upon there background/race/sex, etc, while generalization is taking a statement you know to be true for one person, or a group of people, and applying it towards their whole group. often times they go hand in hand.
ex: stereotype: He's an Italian, so he's a momma's boy.
Generalizing: ALL Italian men are momma's boys.

Stereotyping is to EXPECT someone to be/act a certain way because others 'more or less like that person' acts a that way. Generalization is to ASSUME that someone will be/act like other people who seems to be like that one .

i think stereotyping means your judging in a shollow way and generalizing means that for more statsitical or practical reasons, you've grouped people together knowing that there are exeptions to people in the group.
