Actually the Dutch call themselves Nederlander, after the name of the country Nederland. Only the English language does not know the word Netherlander. So in English we are called Dutch.

Also in some languages we are being referred to as Hollanders (different spellings). Although we do listen to the term, in principle it is wrong. Holland is only a part of the Netherlands, the western bit.

The people of the Netherlands are called Dutch. It sounds weird, because it doesn't have a link to the name of the country. There is a reason for it though found in history.
The Netherlands and Germany are next to each other, and the people that traded with them couldn't keep them apart, to some people their languages sound the same, they are absolutely not. The Germans call themselves Deutsch, which sound familiar to Dutch, that's where it is originated. I do speak dutch, but once when some one asked me: Sprechen sie Dutch, my American friend said: Yes, she speaks dutch. And that's not even that long ago, so the confusion is still there at times.
