most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

If you have an Internet connection then choose the option Automatically Update of your installed Virus Scanner. If you have no connection then you have to go to their websites and download the update file. You can also find update features by a CD or DVD.

That depends on your anti-virus. Some of them have an automatic update system, some don't. And if it's not freeware, and you're not paying for it, then no deal.
Look around in the program for an 'update' option.

It depends on what anti-virus you have. most cost money to upgrade. There is one free-sourced anti-virus out there called clam win. It does the job well, but is a passive scanner, which means, it wont stop you from downloading one, but will spot and remove it when you run it.

If your subscription has run out such in Norton (Symantec), McAffee, or others then you will have to pay for the new subscription.

I would recommend you uninstall that and install a completely free antivirus like Avast. You can get it here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AVG Free is pretty good anti-virus software. You can download it for free and it updates (when you are connected to the internet) every day. You can get it here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
