All factory shipped PCs on today's market are designed to work 24/7.
That is a fact.
Does not apply to home built & especially not to overclocked systems.

Just for your information, leaving a computer on all the time will not in it's self ruin your computer, but here is what will happen depending on your year and model. 8088's 286 and above with hard drive in the beginning the thought was leaving them on all the time would cause early bearing failure depending if it was an AT or tower the difference was how the drive was mounted and which way it spun. if it was vertical then the oil of the bearings of the drive would be thrown out away from their axles and would wipe out the drives, but that was before we got the Monster Hard drives I started out running dos on an 8 bit machine with 64k mem. and extended to one meg, really hi-teck. a 7500 rpm of course slower than 10,000 rpm so getting a drive to rev up is the hardest thing to do try spinning your car at 10,000 RPM and watch the engine go boom. One other factor involved in leaving the computer on is if you have a fan and you have a cat or a road near by or dust guess where it ends up??? THE CPU FAN or the case fan and it causes the computer to over heat and crash. and without a battery and phone back up, a lightning storm with take them out even if they are just plugged in. 1 million volts will make a good conductor of just about anything, it would not be a good thing if ya saw your chip launch out the side of your tower right? If ya didn't have your catchers mit on..

Mine only goes off if I'm going to be away from it for a day or more. It doesn't over heat or anything. However, I suppose it would really depend on the individual computer, though most modern ones should have built-in cooling fans and such.

it is safe to shut down your computer every night, you just can't turn the switch off, you just have to make sure that you actually shut it down through which ever program you use: windows, apple. if you leave your computer on 24/7 you can burn out the battery or memory, the pc can overheat too and why keep it on if your not using it, adds to the electricity bill

well there is pros and cons to both sides of this, every boot is a potential crash but not so much anymore as it was with windows 95 or ME, my theroy would be the total usage on the hard drive may cause it to wear out quicker if you leave it on for weeks at a time, so i would balance that by maybe leaving your computer on all day if your going ot be using it more then once in a day, then turning it off if you know your not going ot be using it for a number of hours.
also if you are running for extended times you should have extra fans installed and software to moniter the temps.

Of course it's safe to shut down your computer every night. I think it's more dangerous to leave it on i.e. if there's an electric power cut, or if you don't have good security programs someone could hack into it. Also, leaving it on will add to your electricity bill.

may want to keep it clean, meaning opening it up and spray it with some dust off or some compressed air to get the dirt off the fans and cpu so it stays nice and cool...
it will run better that way also, but i know lots of people that keep there computer on 24/7... its all good, just a waste of electricity, ill put it on standby if im not using it

I think it is safe but, I was told, you will loose some megahertz speed eventually. A friend said that the computer needs rest to always run optimally.
