MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) is an operating system that was used primarily in the 80's and early 90's. It's a simple operating system with limited memory management capabilities, a command-line interface, and no built-in multitasking support. This is a far cry from Windows XP, which has advanced memory management, a graphical user interface, and can run several programs simultaneously.
You can still access the command-line prompt from Windows XP by hitting Start, choosing Run, and typing "command.com" into the line and clicking OK. Though largely outdated and unnecessary for most users, veteran users still take advantage of DOS commands by writing batch files to script out a series of events. To give you an example of what someone might want to use MS-DOS for now, I have a batch file that automatically copies all of my documents to a backup storage unit in such a way that the directory structure is preserved and it only copies files that have been changed since the last time I executed the file.

GOD.......10 years back. if you ask the same question from a bunch of computer freaks, you'll be considerd as an alien. But good thing you asked 10 years later coz no one ever remember they used MS DOS before windows.
MS DOS stand for micro soft disk operating system. Before windows ruled the earth ;-) dos was the dude in the street. Simply if you want to format a floppy drive, you hv to type the command as " format a:/" and hit enter. and the worst part is you have to remember all these commands to operate your computer.
When windows 3.1 ( this came before windows 95 ) came, the user had to boot the PC in dos mode and then type cd windows>win to load windows. Now this is done automatically coz still windows use dos as its operating platform.
There were no pretty interfaces like all these buttons and pull down menus on dos. IT was an ugly black interface where you can only type commands. If you want to see how dos looks, go to "START" button on your lower left coner of desktop then go to "ALL PROGRAMS" then to " ACCESSORIES" and then " COMMAND PROMPT" click command prompt and a little black box will appear. This is the dos interface.
If you want to know more about commands, type help and hit enter on this black box.

MS Dos = Microsoft Disk Operating System. It's one of the biggest advances in computers in 80's. It was basically the beginning of a home operating system that now you call Windows.

MS DOS was Microsoft's Base Opperating system for windows through ME, not including NT. For the longest time it was the easiest and most efficant way of accessing, activating, and mantaining the system resorces. DOS was done away with when Windows XP was released, Windows ME was never inteded to be mass released and was only released after users found out that XP was an NT based opperating system. The command promped located in both NT and XP is a DOS emmulator and though it can do many things DOS could do, its limited because it is not DOS though.

the answer is that MS DOS is pre runner of windows.
windows still uses this program.
however the name MS DOS = Microsoft Disc Operating System
pre windows XP the last known release of the program was MS DOS V6.22 (to my knowledge), it wasa used with windows versions upto and including Windows ME ( i seem to recall) and was required to start the system and prepare the system either for use as a stand alone operating system or to be used with all versions of windows up to and including the present day. (again as far as i can recall).
I hope that answers your question.

It's an old operating system created by Microsoft, and is the back end of every Windows up until XP (I think).
Here's a wiki link for more in depth information:

Microsoft Disk Operating System
It is a text only command line operating system that I do not recommend you use unless you know some commands.
Just for fun, load MSDOS and type "DIR/W/P" and you will see the contents of your HD without details, one screen at a time.
Type "DIR" and your screen will show the same but so fast it'll make your head spin.
"DIR/W" shows contents in a wide format (no details).
Check this out: "HELP?" you will see all commands MSDOS is able to do.
Microsoft doesn't like people who know MSDOS because it gives the user better control than just Windows, but it aint pretty.
Be careful unless you know what you are doing with it.
Learn some commands by typing the command with a question mark after it. It will give you all the parameters.
PS: I know it quite well and you'd be surprised with the power you have in your head by skipping Windows, I love it. ;-)

It was the beginning. The first operating system. In a way it's what your pc runs on right now (unless you're a mac geek). I still use DOS to fix problems when windows screws up..
