I am a junior in high school and need to start looking into colleges and would really like to go to a good school for theatre. I live in Missouri and would like to stay at least within the state and the surrounding states so I'm not too far from home. I am mostly interested in acting but would also like to have the opportunity to take classes in singing and dancing. I want to go to a smaler college with a lot of personal attention and small classes. If anyone knows of any good schools or could direct me to websites with ranking lists for these types of schools I would really appreciate it!

hey -
the first school that popped into my head that fits all your criteria is Stephens college in Columbia, MO. (You don't have a pic but I assume you are a girl by your name - it's all all-women's college!) I've put down the link to the webpage on their site featuring the theatre program. When I was in HS in Kansas City Stephens was recruiting me and I was really interested but ultimately wound up at Northwestern - another great theatre choice (and only a few hours from MO) but a much larger university than you sound interested in. I wanted big and diverse so I chose Northwestern instead, but Stephens sounds really cool and has all the things you want. It's in state, a small school with lots of individual attention, a strong, prestigious theatre program with lots of options (it looks like you can minor in dance, etc) and opportunities for professional style apprenticeships while still an undergrad. And Jennifer Tilly went there!

You might want to look at UMKC - dunno exactly what goes on for undergrads but I know the graduate program links into professional training w/Missouri Rep and is well-regarded. (UMKC is fairly small, too, by state school standards and has the added bonus of being inexpensive for an in-state student.)

There's also the University of Evansville, in Indiana, which I've heard mixed things about but does have a theatre program you could look into.

There is also a teeny tiny school north of KC called William Jewell college. One of my thespian/choir friends went there but I lost touch with her so I don't know how her experience was. They do offer a theatre major, although it sounds somewhat limited from what the website says. I know they sponsor these really great arts series that come to KC, but who knows how much of that coolness spills over to the school?

good luck on your search!

You'll traditionally uncover specified musical theatre techniques in higher universities. University of Cincinnati school-conservatory of track has one. But even supposing you are no longer certainly a musical theatre essential, your division will do musicals, and such a lot are in well relationships with the track tuition in order that their efficiency majors can take voice classes. Wright State University, close Dayton OH, is a mid-sized tuition with a relatively most sensible theatre application; many in their graduates have performed good within the career--one in all their grads is the lead singer within the Pussycat Dolls (OK, it ain't precisely musical theatre, however hello the woman made well!). On a relatively smaller scale, Northern Kentucky University (that is within the Cincinnati, Ohio metro discipline) is fairly forged. Those are the 2 modest-sized colleges that come to brain. Wright State is fairly selective and you can ought to audition your manner in (after which after the sophomore yr you've a efficiency comparison to verify if you'll be able to preserve). Northern KY is extra open involving admission to the application.
