Love is a feeling like no other. It is a feeling of total bonding with another person. Feeling like the person is so precious to you that you can't think of anyone else. You want to make the person happy. I love my husband so much that I would give up my own life to save his life. I love my children so much that I would do the same thing. Love makes you do things for the people you love out of the ordinary for their sake.
I hope this helps.

So many people talk about love as if it were a train wreck. You 'fall into' it. It's uncontrollable. A madness. "It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end." (love quotes, link 1)

Nonsense.

What are your emotions? They are largely biochemical messages. Certain stimuli cause your body to react in certain ways, and as you feel your body reacting you associate that with an emotional content. If something jumps out at you, your heart races; you call that fear. And if you develop a rapport with someone, your brain secretes drugs like opiates that make you feel warm and secure; you call that love. (very good article on the biochemical basis of love in link 2)

Which is not to say that your emotions don't exist. They do. But it is to say that they don't respond randomly. Things make them occur. And with thought, YOU can make them occur. You can choose not to control what you feel, just like you can choose not to control what direction you're moving in a speeding car. The results are usually very similar.

Building blocks for love are similarity and sharing. If you don't also back that up with commitment, you usually end up with grief, too. If it looks nice, then MAKE it love. Spend time smelling each other's pheremones. Touch a lot. Have sex. Spend your lives together. Be happy.

If the person you think you might be in love with was on a train that was in a wreck and you couldn't get to them, how would you feel? Would you feel like you had to get to them no matter what? Or would you feel comfortable waiting to find out if they are okay?

Only if you find that you love yourself first, then give up to love others selflessly.
