We have a Ball Python, a Red Tail Boa (Colombian), and a Green Tree Python.
The Ball and Boa have NEVER EVER bitten us. You just handle them often so they trust you. The Green Tree, on the other hand, is a bastard and bites every time you reach in to clean the tank, the little ****. lol.
A Ball Python is an excellent first snake. They don't grow to be massive, and they're the most docile. When threatened, they ball up tight. They don't bite unless you hurt them.

A great beginner level snake is a Corn Snake. They are pretty neat because they come in a variety of different colors, and are easy to take care of. I believe they grow to be about 3 feet long, and should probably be fed mice from when they're young until adulthood. Their lifespan is usually around 15 years or so. Another really beautiful/tame snake that is good for beginners is a Ball Python. I currently have one and she is a really fun pet to have. Ball Pythons grow to be about 5 feet long, and will require about a 40 gal terrarium when fully grown. Right now, mine is fully grown and I feed her large rats. Ball Pythons can live to be 25 years old. Don't worry about venomous snakes (not poisonous), because they are illegal to own in most states and you won't just find a Cobra or Rattlesnake at Petco! Hope that helps!

THe only snakes that don't bite often are the ones that you handel alot. you could get just about any snake you wanted and as long as you handeled it as often as possible. the chances of you being bit will be slim. plus if you are bitten 99% of the time it is your fault. Either you spooked the snake, or the was a smell on you that it thought was food.

African house snakes are good first snakes, and they do not get to big in size. You might also want to think about corn snakes they come in various colors and again do not et as big as a python or a boa. Just a suggestion from a snake breeder...

Any non venomous snake that is handle properly and enough can be very safe to have as pets. Reticulated pythons tend to be more aggressive that others, which makes them a good one to stay away from.

Ball pythons are pretty docile... but they can still bite. Usually you can tell the temprament of the snake in the pet store where you buy it.
