This is one of my all time favourite country story songs.
If you look closely at the video in the end the Father is fishing with his son and then if you look even closer you will see a woman there too.
This couldn't be a memory because at the start of the video there were only the two of them and a little girl
So in my opinion. She does survive.

I'm not positive so I'll not venture a guess so as to get your hopes up for nothing. But I do have this answer: Someone told me it's actually a movie. Check it out, it's probably something made for TV but if it were a movie, it would have the complete story and may provide some closure to die-hard fans of the song (which I admit made me cry too).

At the end of the video for the song you will see the little boy and his dad crossing the river to fish. Then you see mom come running with a picnic basket and laughing. She does live.:)

i dont like country but I NEED TO KNOW!! i used to love mcgraw and that video always made me cry :'( its sad
