I lived in a 4 BR house near McKinney for years & paid TXU almost $400 mo. I moved to a 1 BR (710 sf) @ Cliffs of Eldorado Apts. I just got my 1st electric bill & it says I owe $360 for a period of 40 days!!! I live alone & I'm very careful about turning off things when I leave, etc. I never turn on the heat because the apt. is so well insulated (1st floor) & surrounded on all sides by other units! Does this sound INSANE to anyone besides me, & if so - do you think it could be a problem with the apt. thermostat, the meter, or with First Choice??? I need some suggestions, PLEASE!?!?!

Have them come inspect the meter immediately. Also you may want to have them check to see if one of your "neighbors" has taped into your power. Try unplugging everything in your apartment and see if the meter stops running? Something sounds wrong about that. I have had my own apartment in New Hampshire and the power bill was $30 per month, with oil heat, and I thought that was too high.

Check to see that there is nothing "leaking" electricity (something plugged in that appears to be off, but is really on.

next check the meter with everything off. If it's moving still (and fast), call TXU to come out and check their meter (they are the ones who own and repair them).

Are you on an average plan? Is First Choice charging you for someone else's electricity? Since TXU was probably checking the readings on the meter for the last tenant, the reading that First Choice got may be higher because of the electricity used while cleaning/fixing your apartment. Did you contact first Choice before moving in? If you had it turned on and they did some "last second" repairs, that may have ran your cost up.

B-Cool and file a complaint (there is a number on the bill, if not, there's one in the phone book).

One thing you should always do when you move into a new house/apartment is check the meter reading on your first day and make sure that the electric company is well aware of this reading on that date, otherwise you run the risk of paying for power that was used during the time the apt was up for rent.
Check the start date on your bill against your move in date.
Check your meter, it's probably spinning like crazy, and try to find out which device is the power hog.

Call the electric company and have them come out and do an analysis. They can determine if there is a problem. I have heard of some apartments where certain units, the outside lighting is ran to their meter.

It could be all of the above. Have them come out and review your meter, sometimes they read the wrong meter in apartment complexs and charge you for others electric use. The best service right now is Cirro. Check out the site below.
